SPEECH AND COMMUNICATION CLASSES – Students in Years 5-10
Speech and Communication classes prepare students for a communication-savvy world, teaching them to be creative and confident speakers.
Classes aim to empower students with effective communication skills and build their self-esteem through public speaking, eisteddfods, AMEB and Trinity College of London examinations, and other fun, imaginative activities. Small group sessions ensure each student is given the time and attention they need.
In 2019, group classes will be held at Brisbane Grammar School on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (Monday classes will no longer be available). They are offered before school, at morning tea or lunch time. Students also have the option of taking classes during school hours on a rotation system that ensures they will not miss the same school lesson from week to week. This system has worked effectively for many years and is a great choice for boys with co-curricular activities in the mornings and lunch hours.

Cost per term: $260.00 (price includes GST) based on an 8 week term. (2-4 students per 30-minute class).
I will no longer be offering weekly time slots for private lessons, but these can still be booked online as needed by choosing from the available times on the Private Lessons page. Students of all ages can take private lessons. These one-on-one classes are especially useful for those seeking to concentrate on improving specific skills, or for those wanting some more intensive exam preparation.
GROUP CLASSES OR PRIVATE LESSONS?
Throughout my years of teaching, I have found that weekly classes in small groups are more beneficial for students’ long-term improvement. The group sessions help students to develop a more versatile skill set, as they learn to communicate with and alongside their peers as well as individually. However, these benefits are only gained through consistent attendance throughout the year for all four terms.
If you are less interested in this commitment and would rather just focus on taking an exam (or working on another specific project or goal), I would encourage you to book in for some private lessons rather than a weekly group class. This way you can be more flexible and choose a schedule that suits you – book regular sessions, one every so often, or a set of lessons in the lead-up to your exam date. New times will be added regularly for you to choose from online.

2019 STAGE PRODUCTION
Our spectacular shows are always a highlight of the year, taking students on an exhilarating ride through the process of theatre-making. In 2019, we are doing things differently. Instead of one big production we will have two shows performed by two separate, smaller casts, giving every student more of an opportunity to shine onstage.
“It Was a Dark and Stormy Night…” is a two-part variety show celebrating our favourite literary classics. Each cast will perform an assortment of solo acts, duologues, group scenes, poems, musical acts and more.
This is an exciting, hands-on learning experience for students of all ages, whether they are seasoned performers or new to the stage. During 12 hours of intensive rehearsal over four dates, students will receive valuable tuition from theatre industry professionals. Then, on Sunday 5th May, after a final dress rehearsal, each cast will give two performances in the Visy Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse.
For more details and the full rehearsal schedule, see the Performance page.
Places are limited, so don’t delay – enrol now to secure a role in our 2019 production.
